How does botulinum toxin work?

The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin type A used in aesthetic medicine is about 1000x diluted non-toxic substance. The real effect is the relaxation of the muscles, which leads directly to the origin of the wrinkles, i. on the muscle activity, is acted upon. Applying a very small dose of botulinum toxin to the muscle temporarily breaks the connection between the nerves and the muscle, causing the muscle to relax and smooth the wrinkles and unwanted facial expressions, thereby preventing further deepening of the wrinkles. Over time, this effect diminishes and there is a renewed innervation of the muscle. The effect is thus reversible and not permanent.

The course of the procedure

It is an outpatient procedure that only takes a few minutes. The actual application takes 5 to 10 minutes. The application takes place with a thin needle (so-called insulin needle) under the skin in the appropriate area. The actual injection is not very painful; it could be compared to an insect bite, but local anesthesia can be done.
